Celebrating the Yorkshire Dales in music and words

Sunday November 9th will see a revival of a long standing Dales tradition of music, song and dialect verse recitation in Upper Wharfedale at the Buckden Institute, the little village hall of Buckden in Upper Wharfedale.

Singers, poets, musicians and lovers of Yorkshire’s wonderful dialect will be warmly invited to an afternoon of traditional dales folk music, song, poetry and dialect with an emphasis on not just listening but on taking part.

So if you can play a traditional fiddle, flute or accordion or other instrument, or simply want to sing an old or new Dales-inspired song or tune, or recite a poem, your own or by someone else, whether in standard English or Yorkshire dialect, -you will be especially welcome, as will poets who write about Yorkshire and maybe also love Yorkshire dialect.

But if you only want to listen and look, you will be equally welcome. There is no charge for entry but donations will be welcome.

There will be a mixture of music, songs, poetry and dialect, which it is hoped will allow the popular Buckden Sessions – which used to take place in the now hopefully only temporarily closed Buck Inn – to continue in Upper Wharfedale.

The afternoon will start at 1pm and end at 4pm. Timings are designed to fit in with the popular Sunday DalesBus service 874 from Leeds, Otley, Ilkley and Grassington (connection from the 72 from Skipton at Grassington). A short 2½ mile walk from Starbotton along the Dales Way has been planned tie in with the DalesBus service to arrive in Buckden by 1pm. Tea and coffee will be provided at the Institute but participants should bring their own packed lunch.
